Yanks add righties Santos, Ramirez to 'pen

BALTIMORE -- The Yankees' efforts to iron out the back end of their late-inning mix continued on Saturday, welcoming right-handers Sergio Santos and Jose Ramirez to the bullpen at Camden Yards for the second game of the weekend series against the Orioles.

Santos, 31, started the season with the Dodgers and posted a 4.73 ERA in 12 appearances before being designated for assignment on May 27. Santos elected free agency and inked a Minor League deal with the Yankees on Tuesday.

"I think if I can come and establish what I know I can do, and hopefully what the Yankees believe I can do, it'll be a good fit," said Santos, who posted 30 saves for the White Sox in 2011.

He allowed two runs over two innings during the Yankees' 9-4 loss on Saturday.

Santos is filling a roster spot vacated by right-hander Esmil Rogers, who was outrighted to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after Friday's 11-3 loss to the Orioles and is deciding whether to accept that assignment.

"We'll try to get him in slowly," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "We're seeing right-handers, so we're going to need him. He's a guy that has closed and had some success and we have to get him back on track. He's got a swing-and-miss slider, but you have to get in counts to be able to use it."

Ramirez, 25, has appeared with the Yankees in each of the last two seasons and owns an 8.18 ERA in nine appearances, spanning 11 innings. In order to create room on the 25-man roster, the Yankees optioned left-hander Jacob Lindgren to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Lindgren, 22, posted a 5.14 ERA in his first seven big league appearances after being selected in the second round of the 2014 Draft out of Mississippi State University, surrendering three homers in seven innings.

"For a guy that was drafted last June, he did OK," Girardi said. "Obviously there were some pitches he'd probably like to have back, but you can see the talent is there. It's just a little more consistency from him."
