Yanks go with Ford, 13 pitchers for Wild Card

September 29th, 2020

The Yankees’ decision-makers huddled at their hotel in a meeting that manager Aaron Boone described as “pretty long and spirited,” volleying opinions about how the team’s roster should look for the American League Wild Card Series against the Indians. Now we know how they voted.

Boone will have 13 pitchers at his disposal on Tuesday night, preparing to send ace right-hander Gerrit Cole to the Progressive Field mound for a scintillating matchup against the Indians’ Shane Bieber.

The Bombers are carrying three catchers, with knuckleballer extraordinaire Erik Kratz on board as an extra option behind Kyle Higashioka and Gary Sánchez.

“Everyone was mostly on board with going that way,” Boone said. “We did consider scaling it back to two, but the flexibility it gives us to pinch-hit or pinch-run, we felt like that was valuable.”

General manager Brian Cashman executed one change from the 28-man roster that completed the regular season, adding first baseman Mike Ford and moving right-hander Clarke Schmidt to the additional player pool.

Ford batted .135 (10-for-74) with two home runs and 11 RBIs during the regular season, but Boone has lauded the 28-year-old as a potential middle-of-the-order bat. He offers a power-hitting, left-handed option in a late-game situation as well as insurance for first baseman Luke Voit, as the Major Leagues’ home run leader has been hobbled by an unspecified foot injury.

“With Ford, we were looking at some potential pinch-hit slots,” Boone said. “There’s an advantage for our team, that’s very right-handed heavy, in having another lefty available there late.”

Among those bypassed for the Wild Card roster were infielder/outfielder Miguel Andújar and infielder Thairo Estrada, both of whom will continue to travel with the club throughout the postseason. Boone said that the Yankees had considered a 12-man staff, which might have allowed Andújar or Estrada to be on the bench.

Though Jordan Montgomery will not be used to start in this series, Boone said that he envisions the left-hander being useful in a variety of roles.

“He’s someone who could give us length if we get into an extra-inning situation or we get into a situation where we need a big inning,” Boone said. “I think his role is very fluid starting today and moving forward, and then we’ll see how it unfolds."“
