NEW YORK -- Two of the Yankees' most trusted talent evaluators, Jim Hendry and Damon Oppenheimer, will be honored on Saturday by the Professional Baseball Scouts Foundation at the 16th annual In the Spirit of the Game Awards.
Oppenheimer, the Yankees' vice president of domestic amateur scouting, will receive the 2019 George Genovese Lifetime Achievement in Scouting Award, which will be presented by Yanks general manager Brian Cashman. The dinner will be held in Beverly Hills, Calif., and it will be broadcast by MLB Network at a later date.
Earlier this offseason, Oppenheimer also received the 2018 West Coast Scout of the Year Award at the Winter Meetings in Las Vegas. The San Diego native is entering his 27th season with the Yankees and his 17th as a vice president in the club's scouting department.
Oppenheimer has directed the Yankees' efforts related to the MLB Draft for the past 14 years, and he manages all of the club's cross-checkers and area scouts in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico. He began his full-time career as a scout with the Padres in 1988, and he joined the Yanks as a Midwest crosschecker in '93.
Hendry will receive the 2019 Legends in Scouting Award. He has spent the past six seasons ('13-18) as a special assignment scout for the Yankees after serving as the Cubs' GM for 11 seasons from '02-12.
Hendry entered professional baseball with the Marlins in 1992 after a decorated coaching career in college (Creighton University in Omaha, Neb.) and high school (Columbus High School in Miami).
