Caleb Ferguson went from being a 38th round pick to a dominant big league pitcher in record time

Over the last few years, the Dodgers have proven to have a knack for developing high-end Major League talent out of seemingly non-Major League ingredients. In 2017, Chris Taylor evolved from a light-hitting infielder to slugging center fielder and NLCS MVP. This year, we've watched Max Muncy inexplicably blossom into bona fide power bat and Home Run Derby participant. Their latest development voodoo magic, however, can be found on the mound, where 22-year-old rookie Caleb Ferguson has defied a variety of historical precedents
Only three players that were selected out of high school in the 2014 Draft have made it to the big leagues. The first two -- Cardinals right-hander Jack Flaherty and Dodgers outfielder Alex Verdugo -- both made their MLB debuts on September 1, 2017. Both were also high draft picks -- Flaherty was selected 34th overall, while the Dodgers took Verdugo with the 62nd pick. The third 2014 high school draft pick to reach the big leagues was Ferguson, who was taken with the 1,149th pick -- in the 38th round!
