A's set Opening Day roster; Sogard to DL
OAKLAND -- The A's have a 25-man roster in place, after announcing Saturday that infielder Eric Sogard will begin the season on the disabled list with a neck strain.
That leaves them with Chris Coghlan as their primary backup infielder, with Jed Lowrie capable of playing shortstop when Marcus Semien is unavailable.

Coghlan also doubles as one of six outfielders the A's will have on hand; Mark Canha can be categorized in the same way, with the expectation he'll split time between left field and first base.
The A's will carry 12 pitchers, seven of them relievers -- Sean Doolittle, Ryan Madson, John Axford, Liam Hendriks, Marc Rzepczynski, Fernando Rodriguez and Ryan Dull -- to complement a Sonny Gray-led rotation that's in limbo after projected fifth starter Felix Doubront exited Saturday's exhibition game with a forearm strain.

Should Doubront be unable to make his first start in Seattle on Friday, the A's will likely call up right-hander Jesse Hahn to take his place in a rotation that also includes Rich Hill, Chris Bassitt and Kendall Graveman.
The A's already have five players on the disabled list to begin the season: outfielder Sam Fuld (shoulder sprain) and pitchers Henderson Alvarez, R.J. Alvarez and Jarrod Parker, along with Sogard.
Outfielder Andrew Lambo was optioned to Triple-A on Saturday, and each of the remaining six non-roster invitees -- pitchers Sean Manaea, Eric Surkamp and Patrick Shuster, infielder Matt Chapman and catchers Bruce Maxwell and Matt McBride -- were reassigned to Minor League camp.
