A's proceeding with caution with Lowrie's foot

ANAHEIM -- Oakland's Jed Lowrie was out of Thursday's lineup against the Angels.
"It was a planned day off,'' A's manager Bob Melvin said.
The plan going forward with Lowrie's tender left foot? That part of the equation isn't as clear for the second baseman.
Melvin said Lowrie continues to feel pain when running. It's so prevalent that Melvin is forced to pinch-run for Lowrie late in close games.
"It is still bothering him,'' Melvin said. "We were hoping the orthotics would alleviate some of the pain.''
But it hasn't and there's a possibility Lowrie will undergo a season-ending surgery if the discomfort doesn't dissipate.
"I don't know that he can continue to play with the way he feels now,'' Melvin said.
Lowrie, who was on the disabled list in May with a right shin contusion, snapped a 0-for-20 streak with a single on Wednesday. The switch-hitting Lowrie is batting .263.
