Olson optioned to make room for Gossett

MIAMI -- To make room for right-handed pitcher Daniel Gossett, the A's optioned first baseman/outfielder Matt Olson to Triple-A Nashville prior to Wednesday's game with the Marlins.
Gossett was called up to make his Major League debut on Wednesday as the A's starting pitcher.
Olson played in six games for the A's this season. He was 0-for-9, although he did walk twice, and he scored one run and drove in another. He struck out five times.
Over two seasons with the A's, Olson is hitting .067 in 30 at-bats, with two hits and four runs scored.
But that doesn't tell the whole story. The club's No. 15 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, has a bright future, according to A's manager Bob Melvin.
"We like 'Olly' a lot," Melvin said. "He's been a little bit on the shuttle this year, as far as Nashville to here. His versatility is one of the reasons. He can play the outfield as well. So it's probably gotten him some time here where if he's exclusively a first baseman, maybe not."
Olson is hitting .286 this season with Nashville. He has 15 homers and 38 RBIs in 189 at-bats. Over parts of six Minor League seasons, Olson has compiled a .250 batting average. He hit 37 homers and drove in 97 runs in Class A Advanced ball in 2014.
"We still feel like he's a big part of our future, too," Melvin said. "So as much as we can get him here and get a taste of the big leagues, it's going to be good for him in the future. Still a big prospect for us, and a guy we like a lot. So whenever we have a chance to get him here, we like to have him."
