Judge resting but fine after diving attempt

NEW YORK -- When the Yankees announced their lineup for Thursday's series finale vs. the Angels, there could have been cause for concern that Aaron Judge was not in it.

In the fifth inning of Wednesday's 3-2 loss, the right fielder attempted a diving catch on Albert Pujols' single and landed hard as the ball fell out of his glove, potentially jamming his right shoulder. He came up shaking his arm and seemed to be checking on it throughout the inning, but he stayed in the game.

Manager Aaron Boone said afterward that he thought Judge -- who smoked a game-tying, two-run homer to right-center in the third inning -- was fine and "adamant" about staying in, though he added that "we'll check him further and hope that it's not a big deal."

On Thursday, he made it clear that he just wanted to give Judge a day off.

"I think he's fine from [that dive], but it was something last night before he left, I let him know that I was going to have him down today," Boone said. "Just felt like it was a good idea. I haven't seen him yet today; hopefully he's fine. I believe he is, but it was just something that I wanted to give him a day."

Boone said that Judge didn't go through testing, but it will be something the club continues to monitor. In the meantime, Clint Frazier covered for him in right field and Giancarlo Stanton, in his second day back from a nearly three-month stint on the injured list, was the designated hitter in his usual No. 2 spot in the order.
