Duvall's walk-off hit lifts Reds over D-backs in 11

CINCINNATI -- With the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th inning, Adam Duvall ended the Reds' five-game losing streak. Duvall's RBI single scored the winning run for a 4-3, walk-off victory over the D-backs on Wednesday at Great American Ball Park. Arizona lost for the sixth time in seven games.
Billy Hamilton started the rally with a one-out single to left field against reliever T.J. McFarland. Zack Cozart followed with his fourth hit of the game, a ground-rule double to right-center field that prevented Hamilton from scoring. Joey Votto was intentionally walked, setting up Duvall.
"That looked like the game-winner right there," Reds manager Bryan Price said of Cozart's double. "Then, you know they're going to walk Joey, and it comes down to Duvall. Duvall gave us great at-bats. I had a good feeling there."

On an 0-1 fastball from McFarland with the infield and outfield drawn in, Duvall lifted a single to shallow right in front of a desperation dive by David Peralta.
"I'm just trying to get a pitch to drive into the outfield," said Duvall, who notched the first walk-off hit of his big league career. "That way, you don't have to hit it too deep. It was a little low, but I got the barrel on it, and we won the game."
Michael Lorenzen pitched two hitless innings for the victory in relief, as Cincinnati's bullpen allowed just one hit over five scoreless innings.

D-backs ace Zack Greinke threw 104 pitches over five innings, allowing three earned runs on eight hits and three walks, with three strikeouts. Greinke's early nemesis was Cozart, who hit an RBI single in the first and a solo homer to left in the third. In the fourth, Tucker Barnhart rolled a one-out RBI single into right field, scoring Scooter Gennett.

"It was a hot day, and I felt like he was emptying his tank," D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said of Greinke. "He did a great job holding them down and making pitches and eliminating big innings, and he gave us a chance to win. That's what the starting pitchers are supposed to do. That's what I told him."
Reds starter Tim Adleman tied a career high with seven strikeouts, as he went six innings for the first time since June 16. Adleman gave up three earned runs on seven hits, with no walks. His 3-1 lead eroded in the top of the fifth when Peralta hit a solo home run and Jake Lamb hit a game-tying RBI double off the left-center-field wall.
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Lamb ties it up: Adleman left a 91-mph fastball up for Lamb in the fifth and paid for it, but it could have been worse. Lamb's opposite-field drive to left-center field hit the top portion of the wall, inches from being a two-run homer. Instead, it was an RBI double that scored A.J. Pollock to tie the game at 3.

Lorenzen not snakebitten: A one-out error by Cozart on a Daniel Descalso sharply hit grounder gave the D-backs a chance in the top of the 11th. A two-out intentional walk to Brandon Drury brought up Jeff Mathis, who did not swing at three straight Lorenzen fastballs, striking out and keeping the game tied. More >

MARTINEZ EXITS EARLY IN DEBUT
In the top of the fourth, J.D. Martinez, who was making his D-backs debut, struck out on a 90.6-mph fastball from Adleman that hit Martinez's left hand when he swung. Martinez then exited with a left hand contusion. X-rays were negative, and he is day to day. More >

D-backs:Taijuan Walker seeks better results than his last start against the Reds in Thursday's 9:35 a.m. MST series finale. On July 8, the right-hander allowed five runs on five hits, including two home runs, over five innings in a loss to Cincinnati.
Reds: In Thursday's 12:35 p.m. ET series finale, Luis Castillo will make his sixth big league start. Castillo earned his first career win on July 8 against the D-backs, when he allowed just three hits over 6 2/3 scoreless innings.
