AL wins 2013 All-Star Game on 3-hit shutout

After National League pitchers dominated the 2012 All-Star Game with an 8-0 shutout, 10 American League pitchers evened the score with a three-hit shutout on July 16, 2013, at Citi Field in New York.
The AL won 3-0 as the All-Star Game saw back-to-back shutouts for the first time in series history.
The AL's win also ended a streak of three straight NL wins.
Max Scherzer of the Tigers started for the American League and retired all three hitters he faced with a strikeout. Chris Sale of the White Sox struck out two in two hitless innings. The NL got its hits in the fourth, seventh and ninth innings.
Only four NL hitters reached base and only two ventured into scoring position.
Yankees closer Mariano Rivera got a standing ovation in the home of the New York Mets, and pitched a perfect inning to earn the Most Valuable Player award.

The game was scoreless going into the top of the fourth when Detroit third baseman Miguel Cabrera doubled off Arizona's Patrick Corbin and moved to third on a single by Baltimore first baseman Chris Davis. Toronto right fielder Jose Bautista drove in Cabrera with a sacrifice fly.
The AL scored its second run in the fifth against Cliff Lee of the Phillies.
Again, the run scored on an out. Orioles center fielder Adam Jones opened the inning with a double, moved to third on an infield single by Minnesota catcher Joe Mauer and scored when Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy grounded to second.
The third AL run came against Atlanta closer Craig Kimbrel in the top of the eighth.
Kansas City catcher Salvador Perez and Detroit shortstop Jhonny Peralta opened the inning with back-to-back singles. Perez moved to third when pinch-hitter Torii Hunter of the Tigers grounded into a double play. Cleveland second baseman Jason Kipnis drove Perez in with a ground-rule double.

No player had two hits. Sale was credited with the win. Corbin took the loss.
Shortstop Everth Cabrera was the Padres' lone representative in the All-Star Game but did not play.
Yoenis Cespedes of the Oakland A's won the Home Run Derby on the eve of the All-Star Game.
