Diaz recovering from left thumb injury

TORONTO -- Aledmys Díaz was out of the lineup for the Blue Jays on Tuesday for the second consecutive game while he recovers from a left thumb injury he sustained during Sunday's game against the Orioles.
"He caught a ball the other night, one over at third base, a line drive that did something to his thumb," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "Yesterday he couldn't really hold a bat. Today he feels better, but [we'll] give him another day."
Diaz had been playing well in July, hitting .289 in the month, but his injury opens up a spot for Lourdes Gurriel Jr. to see more playing time. Gurriel has been even hotter in July, hitting .391 since being promoted from Triple-A Buffalo on July 2. He enters Tuesday night's game with a streak of six multi-hit games.

Garcia in the bullpen
Jaime García will continue to see time in the bullpen after Monday night's strong showing. Garcia came into the seventh inning of of Monday's game against the Twins, with the Blue Jays trailing by seven runs, and pitched three scoreless innings without allowing a baserunner.
"I didn't expect him to be that good last night," Gibbons said. "So, we'll give him a day or two off and then keep using him if he's good. I don't necessarily see him in that role -- he could come in for a lefty and get a couple innings. … We'll see how it plays out for him, but he's fine with that role."
Garcia has made 13 appearances out of the bullpen in his 10-year Major League career. He has a 3.92 ERA in 20 2/3 innings in relief.
Granderson wins Heart and Hustle Award
Curtis Granderson is the Blue Jays' 2018 winner of the Heart and Hustle Award, given out by the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association (MLBPAA) to one player on each team who demonstrates a passion for the game of baseball and best embodies the values, spirit and traditions of the game.

"[Granderson] embodies all of the qualities of a first-class baseball player," Blue Jays play-by-play broadcaster Buck Martinez said. "[He's] a world-class teammate and the best possible representative of an organization you could hope for on and off the field."
Granderson joins Chase Utley and Dustin Pedroia as the only seven-time winners of the award.
Mayza optioned to Buffalo
The Blue Jays optioned reliever Tim Mayza to Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday afternoon to make room for Ryan Borucki, who made his fifth start of the season on Tuesday night against Minnesota.
Mayza made four appearances, allowing four runs over 5 1/3 innings in his Major League stint since being called up on July 8.
