TORONTO -- The Blue Jays got a big piece back into their lineup Friday when catcher Alejandro Kirk, who had been out with a fractured left thumb, was reinstated from the 60-day injured list prior to the series opener against the Yankees.

In addition, the club recalled infielder/outfielder Davis Schneider from Triple-A Buffalo; placed outfielder Daulton Varsho on the injured list, retroactive to Wednesday, with left wrist inflammation; and designated catcher Tyler Heineman for assignment.

The 27-year-old Kirk started a bit slowly in his first five games of 2026 before the injury set him back. He was 3-for-20 with a homer, a double and a pair of RBIs. In six rehab games, Kirk had one homer and three walks in 18 at-bats.

Adding Kirk makes a huge difference, even as Toronto has fared well at catcher this season thanks to a breakout from rookie Brandon Valenzuela (.790 OPS). Kirk slotted into the cleanup spot for Friday’s game against the Yankees, hitting behind Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

While Toronto’s pitching staff will appreciate Kirk’s calm demeanor behind the dish, manager John Schneider is most looking forward to adding another slugger to the mix to make the lineup deeper.

“There’s always a domino effect,” said Schneider, explaining how Kirk’s return can add a spark for other hitters. “It's really good to have that kind of bat in our lineup, so I think it can rub off.”

It’s been a long road back for Kirk, who had not played since April 3 against the White Sox. He needed time to feel comfortable swinging again, but said he felt great once his rehab stint began on June 3.

“Everything feels good,” Kirk said through a team interpreter. “Finger feels good. Thumb feels good. I’m happy to be back.”

While he was away, Kirk watched Blue Jays games on TV and kept in touch with teammates over text, particularly Valenzuela, whom he gave advice on game calling and working with Toronto’s veteran pitching staff.

Schneider said the club will be careful managing Kirk’s workload in the near future. Giving Kirk more rest will also open the door to more at-bats for Valenzuela’s hot bat.

Bit by bit, the Blue Jays are getting healthier, and Kirk’s return should provide an immediate boost as they open a key three-game series versus New York at Rogers Centre.
