AL West star power will come out in Cleveland

One of the best features of the All-Star Game is always the pregame introductions. Each player’s mere presence serves as a reminder of his greatness and why he merits a place among the game’s best.

All-Star Game presented by Mastercard: Tuesday July 9, 7:30 p.m. ET on FOX

The anticipation should be particularly keen among fans of American League West ballclubs, which are being represented by a ton of talent that could end up dominating the Midsummer Classic. Here’s a team-by-team look at how the representatives of each of the division’s clubs can become must-see performers:

A’s

The reason to watch: People following this team regularly know that Matt Chapman’s the man. He’s capable of determining the direction of a game whether he makes one of his Platinum Glove-caliber plays at third base or clobbers a clutch hit. The All-Star Game gives Chapman an opportunity to further showcase his tremendous skills.

Angels

The reason to watch: Mike Trout, of course. Willie Mays, one of the legends to whom Trout often is compared, delivered many of his finest efforts in the All-Star Game, precisely because it gave him a larger, more captive audience to which he could demonstrate his vast skills. Trout has been impressive in six All-Star Games, batting .467 (7-for-15). A truly transcendent performance would strengthen Trout’s already solid grip on greatness.

Astros

The reason to watch: Gone are the days when individual pitchers regularly showed their best stuff for the three-inning All-Star limit. So maybe the pair of Astros aces, Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole, can combine to silence the National League bats for multiple innings. Both right-handers will be rested enough to participate in Tuesday’s game.

Mariners

The reason to watch: Listed at 6 feet and 250 pounds, Daniel Vogelbach might be this year’s most physically distinct All-Star. Given his dimensions, it’s fun to watch him do anything. As an All-Star reserve, he could enter the game at any time, so it’s worth keeping an eye out for him from the first pitch to the final out.

Rangers

The reason to watch: Cleveland’s Progressive Field offers an inviting target for Texas slugger Joey Gallo: its scoreboard, which is the largest in the Major Leagues. Maybe, just maybe, Gallo can really get a hold of one, smash a pitch to the scoreboard and perhaps knock out a light bulb or two for entertainment value.
