ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Angels finalized their coaching staff, as general manager Perry Minasian said Monday that Darryl Scott has been hired as assistant pitching coach, Dom Chiti will be the bullpen coach and Derek Florko has been promoted to be the club’s third hitting coach.

It rounds out the first coaching staff under new manager Kurt Suzuki, as they join pitching coach Mike Maddux, hitting coach Brady Anderson, bench coach John Gibbons, catching coach Max Stassi, first-base coach/outfield coach Adam Eaton, third-base coach Keith Johnson, infield coach Andy Schatzley and assistant hitting coach John Mabry.

“I think Kurt did a great job,” Minasian said. “I'm excited about the staff. You know, obviously the hitting coach and pitching coach had huge input on who the assistants were. We basically put it in their hands. So I know Brady talked to a ton of people. Mike talked to a ton of people, and that's who they decided to go with. And obviously Kurt's got to stamp it."

Scott comes over after six seasons with the Rockies, while Chiti was the organization’s Minor League pitching coordinator and Florko served as a Minor League performance coach.

“I'm very excited,” Suzuki said. “Obviously, we tried to check every box with personalities, relationships with players, relating to players on their level. And for me being a first-time manager, surrounding myself with good baseball people that are loyal, that are hard-working, that are committed to getting the players better.”

Additionally, Ray Montgomery will remain in the organization in a front-office role after his stint as interim manager last season when Ron Washington was placed on season-long medical leave in late June.

“He's gonna do everything,” Minasian said. “He’s a huge asset, and he's worn a lot of different hats, and is somebody that's respected across the game and will definitely help us from a front-office perspective. For him to have worked in the roles he's worked in, and to have the experiences he has, will only enhance what he brings to the room.”

Scott, 57, served as the bullpen coach for the Rockies from 2020-21 before being promoted to pitching coach from 2022-25. It marks a return to the franchise for Scott, who pitched in the Minors with the Angels from 1990-93 and had his lone Major League season with the club in ’93. He joined the Rockies organization in 2009 as a coach and served as a Minor League pitching coach at several levels before his promotion to the big league staff prior to the 2020 season.

Chiti returns to a familiar role, as he was the club’s bullpen coach from 2021-22 and has been in the organization since 2020 when he was hired as a special assistant to Minasian. He left to join the Mets as bullpen coach in 2023 but returned to the Angels last year as their Minor League pitching coordinator. The 66-year-old brings a wealth of experience, as he also coached or served as a special assistant with Cleveland (1990-93), Texas (2006-08) and Baltimore (2014-16).

“On the pitching side, it's three guys with a ton of experience that have been through a lot of different things,” Minasian said. “And obviously Dom has familiarity with all of our young players, which I believe is beneficial when you hit the ground running.”

Florko has been in the organization since 2019, when he was hired to be the hitting coach for Single-A Inland Empire after serving as the manager of hitting for AXE Batting Company. He then worked as a coach with Double-A Rocket City in 2021 before being transferred to coaching with the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League Angels from 2022-25.

“From a hitting standpoint, with Mabry and Florko, we feel pretty good with surrounding them with Brady and what he brings to the table,” Minasian said. “So we’re excited about that staff.”

Anderson, a former three-time All-Star with the Orioles, is also an interesting hire because he has no Major League or Minor League coaching experience. But he did serve as a special assistant with Baltimore from 2012-19 and has been a private hitting consultant.

“He hasn't necessarily been affiliated with a team but he's worked with individual players for a long time,” Minasian said. “I've always had a ton of respect for him and his baseball acumen and just the kind of person he is. And when I talked to players that were with him in Baltimore, and what he did for that group, he was very impactful for them.”
