Angels sign LaMarre to bolster outfield depth

ANAHEIM -- The Angels signed free-agent outfielder Ryan LaMarre to a one-year contract on Monday, adding to their depth at the position.
LaMarre, 28, is mainly known for his defense. He spent most of the 2016 season in the Red Sox system with Triple-A Pawtucket, where he hit .303/.360/.445 with 15 doubles, 10 home runs, 41 RBIs and 17 stolen bases in 86 games. In 27 career Major League games with the Red Sox and Reds, LaMarre is 2-for-30 (.067) with one walk and 11 strikeouts.

The Angels designated infielder Gregorio Petit for assignment to clear room on the 40-man roster.
LaMarre was selected by the Reds in the second round of the 2010 Draft out of the University of Michigan. He's played in 646 Minor League games over seven professional seasons and has a career .267/.344/.382 slash line. As a prospect with the Reds, LaMarre was rated as the organization's best defensive outfielder by Baseball America for four consecutive years from 2011-14. He owns a career .984 fielding percentage in the Minors.
The Angels now have four outfielders on their 40-man roster in LaMarre, two-time American League MVP Mike Trout, Kole Calhoun and Cameron Maybin, who was acquired from the Tigers in a trade earlier this month.
