The Angels acquired left-hander Dillon Peters from the Marlins on Wednesday in exchange for Minor League right-hander Tyler Stevens. To clear a spot for Peters on the 40-man roster, right-hander Alex Meyer was designated for assignment.
Peters, who was designated for assignment on Tuesday as part of the Marlins' roster crunch, posted a 6.10 ERA over 13 appearances (11 starts) for Miami over the past two seasons. Given his starting experience, the 26-year-old will likely enter the 2019 season as rotation insurance for the Angels.
Stevens logged a 5.43 ERA over 71 1/3 innings across three Minor League levels in 2018, finishing the season at Triple-A Salt Lake. The 22-year-old reliever was an 18th-round pick of the Angels in the 2017 MLB Draft out of the University of New Mexico.
Meyer, 28, missed the entire 2018 season after undergoing right shoulder surgery in September 2017. General manager Billy Eppler said earlier this month that Meyer had suffered another setback in his rehab, and he was expected to be shut down from throwing for four to six weeks. A first-round pick of the Nationals in the 2011 MLB Draft, Meyer posted a 3.74 ERA over 67 1/3 innings for the Angels in 2017.
The Angels also announced that they have requested unconditional release waivers on infielder Jose Miguel Fernandez, who was designated for assignment on Tuesday.
