Escobar placed on DL with oblique strain

ANAHEIM -- Angels third baseman Yunel Escobar landed on the 10-day disabled list for the second time this season on Tuesday after being diagnosed with a mild Grade 1 right oblique strain. He is expected to miss 2-3 weeks, the club announced.
Escobar exited the Angels' 11-10 loss to the A's on Sunday afternoon with what was initially described as an "intercostal strain" and later underwent an MRI exam, which revealed the oblique injury.
"Obviously it's going to take a little bit of time," manager Mike Scioscia said. "These things sometimes run their own course. It could have been worse, I think. Hopefully we'll have some good news there, but it's going to take a little time, for sure."

With Escobar injured, Scioscia said the Angels will "mix and match" at third base. Luis Valbuena started at third for the second straight game on Tuesday against Baltimore, though Scioscia said Kaleb Cowart could also get some looks there.
Cowart, a natural third baseman who has primarily been playing second for the Angels, batted .438 (14-for-36) through his first 10 games this season, but he's cooled down recently and entered Tuesday hitless in his last eight at-bats.
"He got into a little rut," Scioscia said. "But he's having good swings and drew a walk at the end of last night's game. I don't think he's going to stay as hot as he was when he first started, but there's no doubt that his at-bats have been much better than any time in his career. I think it's the confidence he has."
In a corresponding roster move, the Angels called up right-handed reliever Eduardo Paredes, who had been optioned on Monday.

• Scioscia said the Angels have not yet determined where left-hander Andrew Heaney's next outing will be, though he said it's possible it could be in the Majors. Heaney, who is 13 months removed from Tommy John surgery, has made five Minor League starts and threw 87 pitches in his most recent outing on Sunday.
• Matt Shoemaker underwent surgery to release the compressed radial nerve in his right forearm in Los Angeles on Tuesday. Shoemaker will miss the rest of the season, but the injury is not expected to impact his availability for 2018.
• Garrett Richards (right biceps strain) threw his second bullpen session on Monday, tossing 30 pitches and incorporating two-seamers. His next bullpen session is scheduled for Friday, when he plans to go through his whole pregame routine and throw all his pitches. After that, Richards will likely progress to facing hitters.
• Alex Meyer has continued to play catch as he recovers from right shoulder inflammation.
