One way to kick off College World Series? Steal home!
The West Virginia Mountaineers didn’t wait long to make a statement in the Men’s College World Series. In the first inning of the program’s first MCWS game Friday, they scored a run. Actually, they stole a run.
Outfielder Armani Guzman created the highlight-reel play in the bottom of the first against Troy with a straight steal of home. Guzman’s aggressive headfirst slide onto the dish nearly wiped out the home-plate umpire, who regained his balance to deliver an emphatic “Safe!” call.
Besides giving his team an early lead and a jolt of energy in Omaha, Neb., Guzman’s daring dash was his 39th stolen base this year, setting a single-season program record.
