Tigers complete Verlander trade with Astros

DETROIT -- While Justin Verlander takes the mound for the Astros in the American League Championship Series presented by Camping World, the Tigers officially completed the trade that sent him to Houston. Detroit sent Minor League outfielder Juan Ramirez to the Astros late Friday night.
The Tigers traded Verlander to the Astros in the late hours of Aug. 31, in the last moments before players could be dealt and still be eligible for postseason play. Detroit received three of Houston's top 11 prospects in the deal by MLBPipeline.com's rankings in right-hander Franklin Perez, outfielder Daz Cameron and catcher Jake Rogers.
Included in the deal, though, was a player to be named later going from Detroit to Houston on or before Oct. 15. That player turned out to be Ramirez, an international signing by the Tigers two years ago who played in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League this summer.
The Tigers signed Ramirez, a short but strong left-handed hitter out of the Dominican Republic, for a reported $185,000 bonus. After spending last season in the Dominican Summer League, the 18-year-old jumped to the GCL this season and hit .301 (49-for-163) with six doubles, two triples, no home runs and 10 RBIs.
It's not the first time the Astros have scouted the Tigers' Gulf Coast League talent. Houston acquired a gifted but injured right-hander named David Paulino four years ago from the same level as a throw-in to the Deadline deal that sent Jose Veras to Detroit. Paulino became a Top 100 Prospect and made six starts for the Astros this summer before receiving an 80-game suspension for violating MLB's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program.
The Tigers are still owed one more player to be named from their summer flurry of trades, this time from the Cubs as part of the July 31 deal that sent Justin Wilson and Alex Avila to Chicago for Jeimer Candelario and Isaac Paredes.
