She said yes! Hedges gets engaged after Guardians' win
CLEVELAND -- Like any player, Austin Hedges experiences his share of butterflies before each game. But his nerves were on a bit of a different level Sunday.
After the Guardians wrapped up an 8-4 win over the Orioles to secure the four-game series on Sunday, Hedges proposed to his girlfriend, Lexi, on the playing surface at Progressive Field. She said yes, as the left-field video board in the background read, “Lexi, will you marry me?"
A number of Hedges' teammates and loved ones were on hand to witness and celebrate the big moment.
“[I had a] lot of nerves, a lot of nerves,” Hedges said. “I'm always nervous for baseball games. Obviously that's a good team over there, and we want to win the series. Just trying to stay present, knowing that there were some activities after.
“But [it was a] special day. Special day to be able to soak it all in.”
Hedges said he and Lexi have been together since November 2024. The 33-year-old backstop noted he had the ring since early in Spring Training, and had been trying to figure out when the right time to propose was. He figured out his plan a couple of weeks ago.
“[I was] really hoping we won the game,” Hedges said. “I was going to do it regardless, but I really wanted to win that game to make it extra special.”
The Guardians took care of business behind a pair of home runs from José Ramírez and three RBIs from Brayan Rocchio, paving the way for Hedges to put the icing on the cake to an unforgettable day.
