Before he was postseason-bound: Craig Kimbrel

The Red Sox are headed to the postseason for the first time since winning the World Series in 2013, after winning the American League East. As this will be the first time that many fans across the Majors will be focusing on their roster, here's our attempt to learn the origins of closer Craig Kimbrel.

Path to Boston: Was selected by the Braves in the third round of the 2008 Draft; traded to Padres in April 2015; SD sent him to the Red Sox for Manuel Margot, Javier Guerra, Carlos Asuaje and Logan Allen on Nov. 13, 2015.

Trophy case: 2011 NL Rookie of the Year
You might not know: Kimbrel started playing baseball at 4 years old. However, growing up he played third base and outfield, not pitcher.
Kimbreling: Known for his fastball, Kimbrel also has a unique stance, pre-pitch routine, in which he bends low and dangles his right arm, nearly brushing the mound with his fingertips, while looking in for the catcher's sign. He says he began doing that in Triple-A, and that it serves no practical purpose.
Saying I Do: Kimbrel had plans to propose to his wife, Ashley, during a series against the Cardinals in 2012. On Sept. 9, 2012, Kimbrel blew a save, breaking his 25-consecutive game streak, but he still decided to go through with the proposal. They were married in December 2012.
On the Job: Before enrolling at Wallace State, Kimbrel dropped a stack of sheetrock on his foot while working a late summer construction job with his dad. He reported to fall camp at Wallace State with a cast on his foot, which helped develop his throwing style.
