On innings limit, Finnegan getting plenty of rest

CHICAGO -- The Reds have Dan Straily, John Lamb and Cody Reed pitching as their three starters vs. the Marlins this weekend in the final first-half series. With Thursday's off-day, Brandon Finnegan could have pitched Sunday on his regular rest, but the club decided against that.
Finnegan, in his first full year as a Major League starting pitcher, is on an unspecified innings limit for the season. He has also struggled his last couple of starts, including his giving up a career-high four homers to the Cubs on Tuesday -- including three in one inning. Finnegan is 4-7 with a 4.71 ERA in 18 starts and 101 1/3 innings.
"It gives us a chance to give him that break from his last start and going into that post-All-Star break [rotation], he'll probably be slotted fourth or fifth," Reds manager Bryan Price said on Wednesday. "That will give him a little bit of a gap. We're going to get there rather quickly with how many innings we're comfortable with."
Finnegan, and possibly Reed, are the only two starters who will be watched closely in the second half with their innings totals. Lamb and Anthony DeSclafani got late starts to the season because of injuries, and Straily has experience with being stretched out for a full season. Plus, Homer Bailey is expected to return in late July from Tommy John surgery.
Worth noting:
• At Triple-A Louisville, Jon Moscot was placed on the seven-day disabled list because of right elbow inflammation.
"I don't think it's going to be a long and drawn-out process," Price said.
