PHOENIX – The Pirates won their second straight series with a 4-2 comeback victory over the Diamondbacks on Thursday, and they built their winning inning the old-fashioned way – quality at-bats, deep counts and two-strike base hits.
Ryan O’Hearn and Spencer Horwitz had RBI singles in the two-run fifth to give the Pirates a 3-2 lead, all the damage coming with two outs.
Brandon Lowe, who had a first-inning homer for the second straight game, singled on a 1-2 pitch with two outs off Zac Gallen before Bryan Reynolds worked a six-pitch walk while the D-backs held a 2-1 lead. Lowe would finish the day with three hits.
Gallen-killer Ryan O’Hearn then grounded a 1-2 pitch into right field to drive in Lowe to tie the game at 2, and Horwitz followed with another single to right for the second run of the inning. O’Hearn is now 7-for-15 with five RBIs against Gallen.
Joey Bart’s homer in the sixth made it 4-2, enough for Mitch Keller (4-1) to win his third straight decision.
The Pirates left runners on second and third with two outs in the third inning and first and second with two outs in the fourth before putting together their rally in the fifth.
