Crew opens spring facility for individual workouts

MILWAUKEE -- For the first time since mid-March, American Family Fields of Phoenix is gradually springing back to life.

The Brewers have opened their Arizona facility to 40-man roster players who reside in Phoenix for individualized workouts, said president of baseball operations David Stearns. Players report at scheduled times and can use a field and the weight room, and players needing medical attention receive attention from an athletic trainer.

Among those who are participating in individual workouts are Keston Hiura, Corbin Burnes and Josh Hader.

MLB teams that are opening facilities on a controlled basis are doing so in accordance with MLB, local/state and CDC recommendations.

Until recently, the Brewers’ facility was only open to a very limited number of players requiring medical care. It had been shut down for baseball activity since March 12, the date Major League Baseball suspended Spring Training operations in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Soon thereafter, many players who do not reside in Phoenix year-round left for home, where they have been working out on their own to remain ready for a potential resumption of play.

Other players, plus some members of the Major League coaching staff, including bench coach Pat Murphy, remained in Phoenix because it is their permanent home.

In Milwaukee, meanwhile, the Brewers’ facilities at Miller Park remain closed to players for the time being.
