Brewers trade Susac to Orioles for cash

MILWAUKEE -- The Brewers traded catcher Andrew Susac to the Orioles in exchange for cash on Friday, a move that added to Baltimore's depth and eased a logjam for Milwaukee.
Susac, the 27-year-old onetime Giants prospect, had been designated for assignment earlier in the week after the Brewers signed free-agent reliever Matt Albers. Susac was behind projected starters Manny Piña and Stephen Vogt on the Brewers' depth chart, and Milwaukee also has out-of-options catcher Jett Bandy and non-roster invitee Christian Bethancourt slated to be in big league camp.
Susac does have one Minor League option remaining in case he does not make the Orioles' Opening Day roster. He is one of four catchers, including primary backstop Caleb Joseph, on Baltimore's 40-man roster.
Orioles executive vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette called Susac, "a catcher with over 100 games of Major League experience who adds depth ... to the O's at the position."
A second-round Draft pick of the Giants in 2011, Susac logged 243 Major League plate appearances as Buster Posey's backup in 2014 and '15, but saw limited big league time with the Brewers, who acquired him with pitching prospect Phil Bickford in a trade for reliever Will Smith at the 2016 non-waiver Trade Deadline. Susac is a .232/.299/.396 hitter in 104 Major League games.
