CINCINNATI -- Pirates second baseman Adam Frazier exited Sunday's 5-2 win against the Reds in the third inning due to right hamstring discomfort.
With one out and a runner on third base, Frazier grounded into an inning-ending double play and did not return to play defense. Manager Clint Hurdle confirmed afterward that Frazier tweaked something in his hamstring while attempting to beat out the double play. Max Moroff replaced Frazier at second base, batting second.
The extent of the injury is unclear. Frazier was not available to speak with reporters after the game. He will be re-evaluated Monday in Chicago before the Pirates begin a three-game series against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.
David Freese was out of the starting lineup Sunday, so Josh Harrison slid from second to third base and Frazier came in from right field to start at second base. The Pirates are already playing without right fielder Gregory Polanco (left hamstring), catcher Francisco Cervelli (left quadriceps) and three veteran relievers: George Kontos (right groin), Wade LeBlanc (left quad) and Joaquin Benoit (left knee).
Frazier missed 18 games in late April and early May with a strained left hamstring. With Polanco sidelined, Frazier has taken on an everyday role as a super-utility man, bouncing between the outfield and second base.
If the injury is severe enough to land Frazier on the disabled list, the Pirates likely would call up infielder Gift Ngoepe, outfielder Jordan Luplow or infielder/outfielder Chris Bostick from Triple-A Indianapolis. Top outfield prospect Austin Meadows isn't expected to join the team this season and exited Indianapolis' game on Sunday due to an injury.
