Hamstring strain forces Posey to injured list
The Giants placed catcher Buster Posey on the 10-day injured list with a right hamstring strain (retroactive to Sunday) and reinstated right-hander Trevor Gott from the IL before Wednesday night's 7-0 loss to the Mets.
A recent MRI exam on Posey's hamstring revealed a mild strain, and while manager Bruce Bochy initially hoped the 2012 National League MVP Award winner could stay active, a stint on the injured list was unavoidable.
“More than anything, the hamstring is coming around slower than he was hoping. So we decided to go ahead and place him on the IL,” Bochy said.
Posey injured the hamstring in Saturday’s 8-2 win over the Orioles while running out a ground ball in the seventh inning.
Gott, who had been on the injured list since May 25 with a right forearm strain, was arguably president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi’s best acquisition to this point. Gott has a 3.00 ERA and is averaging 9.4 K/9 IP. He was acquired for cash considerations from the Nationals in February.
“He is getting more and more comfortable with experience, and getting what we are calling that sense of belonging in the Major Leagues,” Bochy said. “It started in Spring Training. He was competing for a job, and [he] handled that pressure well and earned a spot on our team. He has carried that right into the season. He has the fastball, and the breaking ball is getting better. He is on a good roll, and that usually comes with confidence.”
Asked why he is more relaxed with the Giants than he was with the Nationals, Gott said, “When you are a young guy [in Washington], especially with all the moves they make, you have options and stuff. I’m not going to lie, you're kind of tense and nervous. You are always looking over your shoulder. I’m just comfortable with the Giants. And I’m pitching well.”
