After playing through an injury to his left pinkie for months, Red Sox third baseman Caleb Durbin recently had surgery to repair the issue.
Durbin underwent a successful proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint reconstruction on his pinkie last week in Wellesley, Mass., the Red Sox announced on Sunday. The PIP joint is the finger’s middle hinge joint.
Durbin suffered a subluxation, or partial dislocation, of his pinkie on a headfirst slide into first base on June 24 against the Rockies at Coors Field. He returned in time to start the next day and did not require a stint on the injured list for the rest of the season.
The 26-year-old posted a .248/.332/.378 slash line, 13 home runs and 64 RBIs in his first season with the Red Sox after being acquired from the Brewers in February. He was one of the best defenders in the Majors at third base, ranking fourth with a Fielding Run Value of 6.
