Cannarella, Dishmey win Marlins' Minor League awards

MIAMI -- Players from across the Marlins’ Minor League system stood together at loanDepot park on Friday for the club's 2026 Player Development Awards. Their faces lit up as Marlins players stopped to shake their hands and offer a few words of advice pregame.

For the young players, the moment brought them onto the field where they collectively dream of playing one day.

The group was recognized before Miami opened its final three-game series against the Braves. Outfielder Cam Cannarella, the Marlins’ No. 6 prospect, and right-hander Eliazar Dishmey (No. 30) were named the organization’s Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively.

“I had a really good year,” Cannarella said. “Getting injured made me think of my family … for what God put in my hands and just meeting a lot of new people. I feel like that's kind of key to success too. I’m just thankful and I pray to God to just keep me healthy every day. Hopefully, I [will] get here next year.”

The 23-year-old climbed from High-A Beloit to Double-A Pensacola and eventually Triple-A Jacksonville. In 98 games, he recorded 22 doubles, 15 homers and 21 stolen bases while drawing 60 walks.

For Dishmey, the honor provided validation for a season’s worth of work.

“It was something that wasn’t on my mind,” Dishmey said in Spanish. “When I found out, I felt really good because, at the same time, that was the result of what I was working on all season.”

The 21-year-old right-hander struck out 33.3% of the batters he faced and held opponents to a .167 average over 104 2/3 innings between Beloit and Pensacola. After reaching Double-A in May, Dishmey recorded 92 strikeouts in 16 starts and helped Pensacola reach the postseason. He also became the first Marlins prospect since Max Meyer in 2021 to earn Southern League Pitcher of the Year honors.

The Marlins also honored an MVP from each of their seven Minor League affiliates.

Triple-A Jacksonville: OF Matthew Etzel
Etzel put together his best power season yet in his first full year with the Marlins organization. The 24-year-old established career highs with 19 homers, 20 doubles, 74 runs and 67 walks while adding 25 stolen bases. His late-season performance earned him International League Player of the Week honors on Aug. 30.

Double-A Pensacola: OF Brandon Compton (Marlins’ No. 13 prospect)
Few hitters in the organization produced at the level Compton did. The 22-year-old posted a .332/.421/.759 slash line with 21 homers and 54 RBIs in just 50 games for Pensacola. Twelve of those homers came in July, the most by a Marlins Double-A player in a month dating back to at least 2005. Across all levels, Compton finished with an organization-best 36 homers and 103 RBIs.

High-A Beloit: LHP Nate Payne (Marlins’ No. 16 prospect)
Payne missed plenty of bats during his climb from Single-A Jupiter to High-A Beloit. The 21-year-old left-hander recorded 147 strikeouts in 111 innings, finishing second in the organization in punchouts. His 31.6 percent strikeout rate also ranked eighth among Minor League pitchers.

Single-A Jupiter: INF Echedry Vargas
Vargas turned his season with Jupiter into a record-setting one. The 21-year-old captured the Florida State League Triple Crown by batting .323 with 27 homers and 94 RBIs, while his 27 long balls established a Hammerheads single-season record. Vargas also led the league with a .983 OPS, 229 total bases and 52 extra-base hits on his way to being named FSL MVP.

Florida Complex League: INF Juan Alva
In his first season stateside, Alva showed an advanced approach at the plate. The 20-year-old batted .318 with a .933 OPS in 39 games, drawing 30 walks while striking out only 19 times. He also went 13-for-15 on stolen-base attempts and saw time at both corner-infield positions.

Dominican Summer League Marlins: INF Santiago Solarte (Marlins’ No. 14 prospect)
Solarte paired power with speed during an impressive season in the DSL. At 17, he hit 10 homers, drove in 47 runs and stole 42 bases in 52 games while posting a .339/.450/.598 slash line. He was the only DSL player to reach double digits in homers while stealing at least 40 bases.

DSL Miami: OF Carlos De Los Santos
The 17-year-old paced DSL Miami with a .375 average, .994 OPS, 45 hits and 64 total bases over 39 games. He also displayed versatility in the outfield, seeing action at all three positions.
