How good was Schlittler this time? 7 wild stats from his start

That’s how you make an opening statement. The Yankees beat the Red Sox, 9-0, in Game 1 of the American League Wild Card Series on Tuesday night. While that score implies an offensive onslaught, it was a 2-0 game entering the bottom of the seventh. Cam Schlittler’s stellar outing kept the Yankees ahead when the game was tight in the early innings.

A year after going eight scoreless innings with 12 strikeouts against the Red Sox in a decisive Wild Card Game 3, he went 6 1/3 scoreless this time with another 10 strikeouts.

Here’s a look at seven stats and facts from another great night for Schlittler.

• Schlittler’s outing put him on a number of short lists. As noted above, it’s already the second time he’s turned in a scoreless postseason outing with at least 10 strikeouts. He’s the sixth pitcher in postseason history with multiple such outings and the first Yankee on the list. He joined Justin Verlander (three), Sandy Koufax, Kevin Brown, Randy Johnson and Cliff Lee.

• Schlittler’s two career 10-strikeout games are tied for the most in Yankees postseason history. He joined Orlando Hernandez, Bob Turley, Roger Clemens and Mike Mussina on that particular list.

• He’s made three postseason starts and has already reached 10 strikeouts twice. That’s not common. Schlittler is the second pitcher in postseason history with at least 10 strikeouts in at least two of his first three career postseason appearances, joining Stephen Strasburg (also two of three).

• Both of these 10-strikeout performances have come against the Yankees’ bitter rivals. Schlittler is the 56th pitcher to make multiple postseason starts against the Red Sox. He’s the second of those to strike out 10 batters twice against them, joining Bob Gibson.

• It’s not just playoff games where Schlittler has succeeded against Boston. In six starts against them, including postseason, he’s allowed just two earned runs. Schlittler’s 0.47 ERA is the lowest by a pitcher in his first six career starts against the Red Sox, including playoffs, since earned runs became official (1913).

• Schlittler is the fourth pitcher in postseason history with two 10-strikeout games before turning 26. He joined 2025 Trey Yesavage, 2003 Josh Beckett and 1970-71 Jim Palmer. If the Yankees advance, Schlittler would get a chance to add to that total.

• He threw a career-high 117 pitches. That’s the third most by a Yankees pitcher in a postseason game since the start of 2005, behind only CC Sabathia twice -- 121 in Game 5 of the 2012 ALDS and 120 in Game 1 of that series.
