The Braves have signed veteran first baseman Carlos Santana to a Minor League deal, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.

Santana’s time as a free agent didn’t last long after the D-backs released him on Friday. Santana suffered an adductor strain in early April and spent the next two months on the injured list. He began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Reno but was released once he reached the maximum of 20 days in the Minors.

In eight games with the D-backs before his injury, Santana had two hits in 26 plate appearances. The 40-year-old owns a career .240/.351/.424 slash line with 335 home runs in 17 MLB seasons.

With Rowdy Tellez currently on Atlanta’s roster, Santana will have a chance to play first base and get regular at-bats with Triple-A Gwinnett. He will provide organizational depth and insurance if veteran first baseman Matt Olson were sidelined.
