Mariners place Carlos Vargas (right lat) on IL, recall Cole Wilcox

Mariners right-hander Carlos Vargas was placed on the 15-day injured list on Friday, retroactive to Tuesday, with a right lat strain. To take his place on the roster, right-hander Cole Wilcox was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma.

Wilcox, 26, was acquired by Seattle from Tampa Bay in exchange for cash considerations on November 5, 2025. He will make his Mariners debut when he first appears in a game.

The 6-foot-5, 232-pound righty made his Major League debut with the Rays on Sept. 19, 2025 at Boston, tossing 1.0 inning of relief in his only career Major League appearance. In 39 games (1 start) between Double-A Montgomery and Triple-A Durham in 2025, Wilcox combined to go 2-5 with a 3.71 ERA (21 ER, 51.0 IP).

Wilcox has appeared in parts of five Minor league seasons in the Tampa Bay Rays organization. He holds a career 3.90 ERA (160 ER, 369.0 IP) with 124 walks, 348 strikeouts and a 1.25 WHIP in 109 games (71 starts).

He was originally drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 3rd round of the 2020 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Georgia. He was traded by the Padres to the Rays on December 29, 2020 along with three other players in exchange for LHP Blake Snell.

Vargas, 26, made 70 appearances for the Mariners in 2025, going 5-5 with a 3.97 ERA (34 ER, 77.0 IP) with 54 strikeouts and 23 walks.

The Moca, Dominican Republic native earned his first Major League win on April 11 vs. Texas and his first MLB save on May 6 at the Athletics. He made his Mariners debut on March 28 vs. the Athletics.

Vargas has appeared in parts of 2 Major League seasons with the Diamondbacks (2023) and Mariners (2025). He was originally signed by the Cleveland Guardians as an international free agent on July 2, 2016 and was acquired by the Mariners on November 22, 2023 along with C Seby Zavala from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for INF Eugenio Suárez.
