Sabathia can't 'finish,' but happy he's healthy

NEW YORK -- CC Sabathia's return from the 10-day disabled list was supposed to stabilize a team feeling the effects of more than a handful of injuries to key players in a short amount of time.
But in the Yankees' 4-1 loss to the Blue Jays on Tuesday, Sabathia (7-3, 3.81 ERA) lasted just 2 2/3 innings and allowed four runs, all of which scored with two outs in the third inning.
"I just think I couldn't finish," Sabathia said. "I got two strikes on a bunch of those guys. I just didn't make the right pitch to get out of that inning."
The veteran came into Tuesday's game on a career resurgence as a finesse pitcher, posting a 5-0 record with a 0.99 ERA in his previous six starts.

Sabathia didn't make a Minor League rehabilitation start before coming off the DL, and instead threw a simulated game while with the team in Chicago. He felt fine after it, so manager Joe Girardi considered Sabathia ready to jump back into his rotation slot.
Girardi said he has no second thoughts on forgoing the rehab start.
"We felt that he was ready to go," Girardi said. "I didn't have a problem with his stuff [Tuesday], I just felt like maybe he started to overthrow a little bit."
The bright spot for the 36-year-old southpaw was that he was back on the mound, and he walked away from the start healthy.
"It was exciting to get back out there," Sabathia said. "I wish I would've had better results, but it felt good just to get back out there and get that under my feet.
"It's frustrating. Obviously, I want to pitch better, but I feel good. I'll be ready next time."
