PHOENIX -- That is one way to score an insurance run.
Phillies second baseman César Hernández bunted a ball just to the left of the pitcher's mound in the top of the eighth inning of Tuesday night's 5-2 win at Chase Field and scored on the play.
D-backs left-hander Jake Diekman fielded the ball, but spiked his throw in front of Paul Goldschmidt. As Hernandez cruised past second base, D-backs right fielder Steven Souza Jr. picked up the ball down the right-field line and threw it into the stands on the third-base side to allow Hernandez to score a badly needed insurance run.
Hernandez flew out of the box, perhaps putting pressure on Diekman to make a good throw. Hernandez reached first base in 3.70 seconds. He also reached a 30.8 feet-per-second sprint speed, according to Statcast™. Thirty-plus is considered elite.
