Yankees stun Giants with rare DP combo

NEW YORK -- 4-1-5 may be the most prominent area code in San Francisco, but it was the Yankees who used those numbers to answer the call and disconnect a budding Giants rally in their 5-2 victory on Sunday at Yankee Stadium.
With one out and Mac Williamson at first base in the eighth inning, Ramiro Pena hit a hard grounder to the right side that second baseman Starlin Castro smothered with a diving stop, tossing to pitcher Chad Green covering first base.
Green, a 25-year-old rookie who earned his first career save with 2 1/3 innings of relief on Sunday, alertly turned and fired across the infield to nail Williamson trying for third base, with Chase Headley applying the tag as Williamson slid past the bag.
"That's a play we work on a lot in Spring Training and doing PFPs [pitchers' fielding practice] throughout the year, so that's something we work on all the time," Green said.
The double play went into the scorebook as second base to pitcher to third base: 4-1-5.
"It's an outstanding job on a couple different parts," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "Castro, Greenie -- it's not an easy ball to catch -- and then it's a tough play, bang-bang. Then to have the presence of mind to make a good throw over to [Headley]; it's obviously a throw that bounced, but it's on line. Chase makes an outstanding play. It's really the play of the game."
