Rangers calling up Chi Chi to start on Monday

ARLINGTON -- The Rangers announced Saturday that right-hander Chi Chi Gonzalez will be recalled from Triple-A Round Rock on Monday to start against the Yankees in New York. 
Gonzalez, the team's 2013 first-round pick (No. 23 overall), is 3-6 with a 5.04 ERA in 14 starts with Round Rock this season. Despite the high ERA, he carried a 3.90 ERA in 14 appearances (10 starts) with the Rangers last year. He also threw 1 2/3 innings in the American League Division Series against the Blue Jays.
"This is familiarity. He stepped up big for us when he first came up last year, and just the overall body of work," manager Jeff Banister said. "It kind of plays into the philosophy of a three-pitch-or-less mentality, get the ball on the ground."
Veteran right-hander Kyle Lohse, who is at Round Rock as well, was also an option to make Monday's start. Since signing a Minor League deal on May 14, he's struggled with a 5.52 ERA in six starts. Cesar Ramos, who currently works out of the bullpen but has made four starts this season, was also a candidate.
"Given the overall choices, I felt like he was the best fit for us right now," Banister said.
Injuries have hampered the Rangers' rotation of late. Left-hander Derek Holland went on the 15-day disabled list with left shoulder inflammation Wednesday, and later that day they said Colby Lewis would miss at least two months with a strained right lat muscle.
This all happened with right-hander Yu Darvish already on the DL because of right shoulder discomfort after making just three starts following his return from Tommy John surgery.
"We've got people that can do the job, too," left-hander Martin Perez said. "We're just trying to focus on what we have to do and help the team. We can't control that situation right now."
Rangers officially activate Griffin, place Lewis on DL
The Rangers officially placed Lewis on the 15-day DL before Saturday's game against the Red Sox and activated right-hander A.J. Griffin to make the start against the Red Sox. Lewis' placement on the DL is retroactive to June 22.
General manager Jon Daniels said Wednesday it's possible Lewis could be transferred to the 60-day DL. The 36-year-old righty will not throw for two months, and will then undergo another MRI before he's able to start a throwing program.
"When you look at the timetable, the math would line up to where that is possible," Daniels said.
Lewis is 6-1 with a 3.21 ERA in 15 starts.
Worth noting
• Excluding back ends of doubleheaders, Saturday's scheduled first-pitch time of 8:20 p.m. CT was the latest start time ever for a game in Arlington.
• Darvish is expected to throw a bullpen before Sunday's series finale. It would be the first time throwing off a mound since being placed on the DL June 13.
• Retiring Red Sox slugger David Ortiz was honored before Saturday's game as he continues his farewell season. He hit his first career homer in Arlington on Sept. 14, 1997.
