BALTIMORE -- The Orioles placed right-handed starter Chris Bassitt on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to Friday, with low back discomfort, and recalled right-hander Trey Gibson from Triple-A Norfolk on Monday.

Gibson will start tonight's game against the Mariners.

In his previous start on Wednesday against the Red Sox, Bassitt cruised through the first two innings on 20 pitches before laboring through the third and exiting his start early with a back injury, turning the ball over to Albert Suárez for the fourth in an 8-1 loss.

Manager Craig Albernaz was not certain whether Bassitt could potentially return when he’d be eligible on June 20.

“Too soon to know right now,” Albernaz said. “It's one of those things where he's looking at his options. He's looking at his options and kind of seeing what the best possible action is.”

In his first season with Baltimore, the 37-year-old has a 5.27 ERA in 12 outings (10 starts).

Meanwhile, catcher Samuel Basallo is also out of the lineup with a wrist issue, though Albernaz indicated it wasn’t serious.

Basallo was in and out of the lineup through the weekend series in Toronto, exiting Friday’s game early, pinch-hitting late Saturday and then being pinch-hit for late Sunday following an earlier collision at the plate.

On Monday, Albernaz suggested that the incident aggravated something Basallo has carried his entire career.

“He has a bony growth in his wrist,” he said. “So it's one of those things where it's going to be uncomfortable and it's something that he's always had. And just like we talked about with young players, development's messy.

“And one of those things with Sandy is knowing his body and playing through some things and knowing that he can play. And so it's just one of those things where we're going to have to learn on the fly.”
