Cincinnatians love their Skyline Chili, an institution that has grown to more than 100 locations in Ohio and Kentucky.
Skyline has become such a beloved Queen City staple that it’s even on the menu in Queens.
That’s right: During the Reds-Mets series this week at Citi Field in New York, fans had the opportunity to try a version of Skyline’s famous chili -- not the official one -- as part of a season-long “Wok 'N' Roll's Cities to Citi Field” promotion at the ballpark, which includes famous fare from the cities of teams who are in town to play the Mets.
In the bottom of the third inning of the series finale on Wednesday night, hilarity ensued on the Reds’ broadcast when longtime sideline reporter Jim Day tried the “Skyline Chili Egg Roll,” which includes chili, spaghetti and cheddar cheese.
“Since I’m a team player, I’m going to try it out,” said Day, who has been on Reds telecasts for the past 25 years. “Um …”
After Day took his first bite and seemed a bit perplexed by what he was tasting, play-by-play broadcaster John Sadak chimed in.
“Not the world’s most ringing endorsement,” Sadak began before breaking out into laughter, “when it opens with a long, 'Um.'”
“You’re killing me,” Day replied. “Well, my mom taught me not to talk with my mouth full, so, I’m breaking that rule, too. Mom, I’m sorry.”
As Sadak and longtime color commentator and former Reds reliever Jeff Brantley continued to laugh, nearly to the point where they couldn’t continue, Day continued to work on the egg roll.
Then, as the laughter persisted, he deadpanned:
“This is the lowest point of my career. And I’ve had some low ones.”
