This Minor League bobblehead giveaway is listed on eBay for hundreds -- and $30,000?!
It's safe to say the people back home hold Cooper Flagg in high esteem.
Bobbleheads featuring the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year -- given away for free to attendees of Wednesday evening's Portland Sea Dogs game -- were listed on eBay on Thursday with opening bids of $250 on the low end and $30,000 on the high end.
Flagg hails from the tiny town of Newport, Maine, about 100 miles north by northeast of Delta Dental Park at Hadlock Field. Though he went out of state for a more competitive high school basketball experience, played a year of college hoops for Duke in North Carolina and is now a forward for the Dallas Mavericks, Mainers clearly consider him one of their own.
The line for Wednesday's 6 p.m. game in Portland reportedly began to form at 8:30 a.m. -- eight hours ahead of gates opening -- and stretched all the way around the neighboring home arena of the NBA G League's Maine Celtics and through a parking lot beyond the Hadlock outfield walls.
With 1,000 Flagg bobbleheads to give away, the Double-A affiliate of the Red Sox drew a capacity crowd of 6,868 for their midweek 13-5 loss to the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (NYM).
Of those 1,000 bobbleheads, a mere 12 of them appeared to be on offer on eBay on Thursday afternoon, with an average "Buy it Now" price of $4,237.75. That figure is warped by two listings -- one for $17,000, and another with the aforementioned $30,000 listing.
Are those most extreme asking prices intended as parody? Shots in the dark? Maybe. Or maybe those sellers are true believers who won't part with their Flagg bobbleheads for a penny less.
