Ahmed's injury has D-backs weighing options

PHOENIX -- D-backs shortstop Nick Ahmed will miss six to eight weeks after fracturing his right wrist Sunday in what was scheduled to be his final Triple-A rehab game.
Ahmed had been out since the end of June after he suffered a fractured right hand on a hit by a pitch. He had been slated to be activated for Tuesday's series opener against the Dodgers.
"I don't know how unlucky one person can be, but he seems to have taken his share of unlucky this year with those two hit by pitches," D-backs GM Mike Hazen said. "It's obviously something that's disappointing for him, given the way his season was going and where it is now.
"Disappointing for the team. We were hoping to get him back, but we'll have to pick up and move on. We're going to just have to get going. We've dealt with injuries all year, and we'll continue to and we just have to keep going out and winning games, but it's very unfortunate for him what happened."
In order for a player to be eligible for the postseason, he has to be in the organization by Aug. 31. Hazen said that he continues to scour the waiver wire and discuss possible deals with teams when it comes to adding a shortstop, but nothing has much "traction" right now.
If they don't add a shortstop, the D-backs will need to get through the rest of the season with a combination of Ketel Marte and Adam Rosales with Jack Reinheimer and Ildemaro Vargas as depth at Triple-A.
Chris Owings, who was the team's primary starter at shortstop before fracturing his right middle finger July 30, is eligible to be activated off the 60-day disabled list on Sept. 29. Whether he will actually be ready remains to be seen.
"We haven't even gotten to the phase of the rehab yet where we have a good handle on how quickly or slowly it's going to progress," Hazen said.
The D-backs also refuse to say that Ahmed is done for the season. If his wrist heals in six weeks, the D-backs could still be playing, as they entered Tuesday in first place in the National League Wild Card standings.
"If we play as deep into the season as we want to and that we are hoping to, it may overlap with Nick Ahmed, and we're going to hold out hope that that happens," D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said.
