PHOENIX -- The D-backs have reinstated right-handed pitcher Rubby De La Rosa from the 10-day disabled list, the team announced on Wednesday.
The 28-year-old will return to the mix in the Arizona bullpen and take the place of RHP J.J. Hoover, who was optioned to Triple-A Reno following the team's 10-3 loss to the Braves on Tuesday.
"We felt like it would be the best thing for J.J. to go down and continue working to get back to what he was early in the season," Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said. "I know he had a great April and May and things started to become a little inconsistent starting in the third month of the year."
De La Rosa was placed on the DL on July 6 with inflammation in his throwing shoulder. Up until that point, he owned a 5.40 ERA and eight strikeouts in five innings with the D-backs this season. All three of the runs he surrendered this season came in a June 29 outing against the Cardinals.
In three total rehab appearances with the Arizona Rookie League D-backs and Reno, he threw three innings and allowed two runs.
Hoover was 1-1 with a 4.82 ERA in 28 innings during his first season with the D-backs.
"We know it's in there -- we know there's a great work ethic," Lovullo said. "We know that there's a tremendous competitor in there, and he's a great teammate. So we felt like it was gonna be the best thing for him to get back on track."
Lovullo said De La Rosa was on his way to the ballpark when the announcement was made, but did not confirm that he would be available to throw in the team's series finale with the Braves.
