Barnes recalled; Petricka and Shafer sent down

BALTIMORE -- The Blue Jays recalled right-hander Danny Barnes and selected the contract of right-hander Murphy Smith from Triple-A Buffalo prior to Monday night's game against the Orioles.
In corresponding moves, right-handers Jake Petricka and Justin Shafer were optioned to the Minor Leagues while former long reliever Luis Santos was designated for assignment.
The moves became necessary after the Blue Jays had to use their bullpen for 12 innings over the previous two days.
"We needed two arms," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said of his bullpen. "It's banged up. We used a lot of guys on Saturday and we used a lot of the same guys yesterday."
Murphy was originally scheduled to start for Triple-A Buffalo on Monday night. He has a chance to make his Major League debut after spending the previous 10 years in the Minor Leagues. The 31-year-old had a 3.59 ERA in 26 appearances for the Bisons this season.
Injury updates
• Brandon Drury received follow-up imaging on Sunday and his hand specialist was "pleased with the progress and healing." He is scheduled to have another follow-up exam when the Blue Jays return to Toronto early next week. Drury, who has been out since Aug. 4 with a fractured left hand, will remain in a removable splint for one more week.
• Infielder Yangervis Solarte is performing strengthening exercises and is "feeling good," per a club spokesman. He recently began a throwing and hitting progression without any issues. Solarte has been out since Aug. 11 with a strained right oblique.
• Right-hander Marcus Stroman played catch on Sunday for the first time since he hit the disabled list with a blister on his right middle finger. Stroman will continue throwing this week, but there is still no exact timetable for his return.
