Big names sign deals ahead of arbitration deadline

The deadline for arbitration-eligible players to exchange salary figures with their teams was Friday at 1 p.m. ET.
For any case that eventually goes to a hearing in February, a panel of arbitrators will decide between the two figures. Whichever is picked will be that player's salary for the 2017 season.
The deadline resulted in a flurry of agreements between clubs and its arbitration-eligible players. For players and owners who do not reach a deal by the deadline and end up exchanging salary figures, it doesn't mean a hearing will happen. The two sides still can negotiate a deal -- for one year or longer -- right up until the time of the hearing. Most work out something before then.
Some clubs employ what's called a "File and Trial" strategy, treating today's deadline as a hard one. These clubs cut off negotiations at that point, at least in regard to one-year agreements.
Generally, players gain arbitration eligibility after logging three years of Major League service time. They then go through the process for three years, until reaching free agency after six years of service. A select group of "Super Two" players who meet certain criteria gain eligibility after two-plus years of service and then have arbitration rights for four years.
