D-backs' late, hard-fought push for postseason ends with Game 162

SAN DIEGO -- They fought so hard and came so close, but in the end the deficit was just too great to make up.
With the Diamondbacks in the seventh inning of their game with the Padres on Sunday afternoon, the Phillies completed a 7-3 win over the Rays to eliminate Arizona from the postseason chase. Arizona went on to lose, 9-4.
The Diamondbacks’ improbable run began a week ago Saturday, when they beat the Yankees and likely AL Cy Young Award winner Cam Schlittler. It lasted six games, including a three-game sweep of the Rockies and the opening game against the Padres.
A 10-7 loss Saturday night put the Diamondbacks on a razor's edge. They needed to beat the Padres and have the Phillies lose to the Rays on the season’s final day.
Instead of a Sunday night flight to Atlanta for Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series, the Diamondbacks will head home for the winter.
