PHOENIX -- Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was placed on the 10-day injured list on Saturday, and the club has called up Tommy Troy, rated by MLB Pipelin as the club's No. 4 prospect.
Gurriel exited Arizona’s Friday night loss to the Rockies in the top of the sixth inning after he felt tightness in his left hamstring while making a sliding catch. An exam revealed a left hamstring strain. An exam revealed a left hamstring strain, and though manager Torey Lovullo said the severity was not yet known, the team is being cautious, considering how hard Gurriel worked to return from a torn ACL that he sustained in September 2025.
“We're looking for it to be as short as possible, he wouldn't be able to play for the next couple of days, and it just gave us a chance to bring up Tommy Troy,” Lovullo said. “It’s a great opportunity for Tommy.”
Gurriel is slashing .228/.284/.304 with 11 RBIs and one home run in 25 games this season, though he remains as dependable as ever on defense. He has yet to commit an error in 2026, ranking well above the league average fielding percentage of .989 among left fielders. He played left field in 24 of his 25 appearances this season.
The one-time All-Star (2023) is not expected to miss much time.
“He probably would have gotten better in three or four days, but we wanted to make sure that we give him enough time, given what he's worked through, and put his body through to get back to this point,” Lovullo said. “Why fast forward that? Let's just give him 10 days and read and react once we get to that 11th day.”
The 24-year-old Troy has yet to make his big league debut, but he has accumulated 268 games of Minor League experience dating back to 2023. He’s slashing .307/.397/.449 with three home runs and 28 RBIs in 44 games with Triple-A Reno this season.
He began his professional career as an infielder, but has slowly transitioned to the outfield over the past few seasons. Lovullo said the club decided to call up Troy because of his outfield experience. He has committed two errors in 18 games as a left fielder at Reno this season, and has been perfect in his seven games as a center fielder.
The decision was made too late for him to make Saturday’s starting lineup, but Lovullo said the 2023 first-round Draft pick (12th overall) may very well be used as a defensive replacement.
“He's just an energized player, and a very focused, hungry athlete,” the skipper said. “We feel he can come up here and help us win some baseball games.”
