Second baseman Diego Goris drove in three runs with a homer and a decisive two-run single in the eighth, and Pacific Coast League Player of the Week Casey McElroy had two more hits to push his batting average over .400 Monday night as Triple-A El Paso scored an 8-6 win over Fresno in the Texas City.
Right-handed starter Brandon Morrow (7.20 ERA) had his best outing since last season's shoulder surgery, allowing three runs on eight hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in six innings.
McElroy, 26, the Padres' 11th-round pick in the 2011 Draft, led all of Minor League baseball with 14 hits last week, and he has 20 hits in his last 39 at-bats to push his season batting average to .412. The third baseman was 2-for-3 with a RBI on Monday. McElroy spent time at second, third and short last week while winning Player of the Week honors. The left-handed hitter had five doubles, a triple, nine RBIs and 11 runs scored last week with a 1.234 OPS (.484 on-base percentage and .750 slugging percentage).
Goris (.359) was 2-for-4 on Monday with his second homer. His two-run single in the eighth was actually a three-run play as Goris circled the bases after an outfield error.
The Chihuahuas lead the PCL with a team batting average of .306.
Left-hander Daniel Moskos (3.21 ERA) followed Morrow with a strikeout in a perfect inning. Right-hander Aaron Northcraft (2.57) walked three in two-thirds of an inning and was charged with two runs. Left-hander Frank Garces (1-0, 4.15) got the win despite allowing a run on two hits and two strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings to blow the save.
Right fielder Yeison Asencio was promoted from Double-A San Antonio, where he was hitting .242, to El Paso on Monday to replace Jose Pirela, who was recalled by the Padres.
