Shohei Ohtani is often called one of the greatest baseball players of all time.
His manager, Dave Roberts, would say the same. But the Dodgers skipper would also call Ohtani a Petrus or a Le Pin.
Come again?
For anyone unfamiliar, those are wines -- Bordeauxs, specifically. And that’s a topic Roberts knows a lot about.
On the next episode of "Over the Plate," a show for the foodie baseball fan that is available to all MLB.TV subscribers and also airs on MLB Network, hear part of Roberts’ recent interview with Matt Weiss on “The Wine Centric Show”, in which the four-time World Series champion, affectionately known as “Doc”, detailed how he went from a novice with the grapes to someone who is considered the doctor of wine in MLB.
“Even in my playing days, I was kind of the go-to on where to visit in the Napa Valley,” Roberts said in the interview. “Or people would say, ‘Hey, Doc, what's good to drink? What do I order on the list?’ The wine list always kind of comes in my direction.
“I think in the baseball world, people definitely know me as one of the wine guys.”
Roberts -- who is the co-owner of Red Stitch Wine along with his wife, Tricia, and former Giants infielder Rich Aurilia, among others -- also compared MLB superstars Aaron Judge, Paul Skenes and Pete Alonso to certain types of wine during the interview. And he goes into great detail about each one of his selections.
“Man, wine makes this world a better place,” Roberts said.
