Dodgers raise funds to donate meals in LA
Over the weekend, the Dodgers continued their efforts to provide resources to the community, raising more than $1.1 million, which will be used to supply more than 3.3 million meals to people facing food insecurities in the Los Angeles area.
“This past year was full of physical and emotional strain -- testing our endurance as a global community,” said Nichol T. Whiteman, CEO of the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation. “LADF appreciates each and every supporter whose generosity paves the way for Angelenos to survive these challenging times and emerge even stronger.
The event was streamed live from Dodger Stadium. Current players Trevor Bauer, Mookie Betts, Corey Seager, Joe Kelly, Max Muncy, David Price and Will Smith all made appearances. Joining them were former Dodgers players, including Steve Garvey, Fernando Valenzuela and Andre Ethier.
Some of the items that were bid on during the fundraiser included game-used items and World Series memorabilia, a White Roland Grand Piano that was played live on the field and three 2020 World Series rings, which went for $100,000 apiece.
Aside from the money raised, the LADF also continued its efforts to support local businesses, partnering with Jon & Vinny’s and Osteria Mozza to deliver meals to guests who donated in advance of the evening.
During the event, owner Magic Johnson had a conversation with Bauer, then immediately pledged $50,000 to the cause.
“Trevor, listen, all you have to do is do your part, brother, because we have everybody else doing their part,” Johnson told Bauer. “And that’s how we won last season, and that’s how we’re going to win this year, as well.”
