PHOENIX -- The Dodgers cleared one roster spot on Friday by selling the contract of outfielder Darin Ruf to the Samsung Lions in Korea, according to the Yonhap News.
The club has not confirmed the move.
The Dodgers have yet to announce the signings of free agents Chase Utley and Franklin Gutierrez, as they need to make room on the 40-man roster. Ruf's removal, once he clears release waivers, leaves one more spot to clear.
Ruf, 30, was acquired from the Phillies with Darnell Sweeney for Howie Kendrick in November. Ruf was well down the depth chart in a very crowded Dodgers outfield that includes Joc Pederson, Yasiel Puig, Andre Ethier, Andrew Toles, Scott Van Slyke, Trayce Thompson, Kiké Hernández and Brett Eibner.
Ruf reportedly received a contract for $1.1 million.
