Doughboys threaten late, but lose 6-4 to Kingsport

The Johnson City Doughboys dropped a road decision to Kingsport on Sunday night, falling 6-4 in a seven-inning contest at Hunter Wright Stadium.

The Doughboys (1-2) loaded the bases with two outs in the final frame, but J.P. Kenyon got Cade Sumbler to ground out, giving the Axmen (1-3) their first win of the season.

Johnson City’s Cherokee Nichols hit his first home run of the season with a 417-foot tape-measure-blast in the first inning, and Damon Cox followed it up with a two-run homer in the second inning. However, Johnson City would not score after that.

With Kingsport trailing 4-3 in the fourth inning, Axmen first baseman M.J. Rodriguez hit a bases-clearing double to center field to put the home team in front for good.

Brett Banks and Gianluca Shinn both threw scoreless innings on the mound for Johnson City.

The Doughboys continue their road stretch when they travel to Bristol on Monday night. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
